Elevation in Light
A multi-storey residence whose front elevation is composed almost entirely in light — linear coves, arched feature panels and frameless glass balustrades.
The Design Story
This elevation is designed for the evening. During the day the composition reads as a straightforward stack of balconies; after dark, concealed linear lighting traces the edge of every slab and turns the same geometry into a set of illuminated frames.
Each floor is given a textured stone-clad panel with a large arched cut-out, and the arc is echoed by a continuous light line set just inside it. Because the light source is hidden and the run is unbroken, the curve reads as a drawn line rather than as a row of fittings — which is the difference between architectural lighting and decoration.
Frameless glass balustrades were specified so that nothing interrupts the illuminated bands horizontally. A solid or railed balustrade at this scale would have cut the composition into pieces; glass keeps the light lines continuous across the full width of the façade and lets the balcony interiors contribute their own warmth.
The vertical circulation core to the left is treated as a contrasting element — a plain, pale, ribbed surface, deliberately unlit except at its edges — so the lit bays read as the primary rhythm. At ground level, wall washers graze the compound wall and gate piers, anchoring the building to its plot rather than leaving it floating.

The elevation had to work hardest at the hour the owners actually arrive home. Concealing every source and letting only the light itself be visible is what keeps a heavily illuminated façade from looking commercial.
